What You Need to Know
From 18 November 2025, all company directors, people with significant control (PSCs) and company secretaries will be legally required to verify their identity with Companies House.
As an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP), Tann Law Solicitors can verify your identity on your behalf. We’ll guide you through the process and make sure everything is completed correctly, so your business stays compliant without the hassle.
Why Identity Verification Matters
This change is part of the UK Government’s ongoing effort to improve transparency, reduce fraud, and make the Companies House register more reliable.
Identity verification confirms that the people setting up, running, or controlling companies are who they say they are. It is designed to:
- Build trust and transparency in UK business.
- Support economic growth by improving confidence in company information.
- Help prevent misuse of the Companies House register and tackle economic crime.
Around 6–7 million people are expected to complete verification between November 2025 and November 2026.
How to Verify Your Identity
There are two options to verify your identity:
- Directly through GOV.UK One Login
You can complete verification free of charge using GOV.UK One Login. You’ll be guided through a short digital process to:
- Scan your passport or photo ID using the GOV.UK app.
- Answer security questions online.
- Or verify at a participating Post Office.
Most people complete the process in under three minutes, and you’ll receive a personal verification code once approved. This code must then be linked to each company role you hold.
- Through an Authorised Corporate Service Provider (ACSP) — Like Tann Law Solicitors
As an ACSP, Tann Law Solicitors can handle verification on your behalf. This is often the preferred route for those managing multiple roles or who prefer professional support. We will:
- Manage the process from start to finish.
- Ensure compliance with Companies House standards.
- Securely store verification records, as legally required.
- Advise you on linking your verification code to your company records correctly.
We make the process simple, secure, and fully compliant with UK data protection laws.
Meeting Companies House Standards
Whether you complete the process yourself or through us, the verification must meet Companies House requirements. Here’s how it works:
Step 1: Provide your personal details, including full name, date of birth, address history, and email address.
Step 2: Show valid ID, such as a passport, driving licence, or biometric residence permit, plus a proof of address (e.g. a bank statement or utility bill) if needed.
Step 3: Documents are checked carefully to confirm they’re genuine.
Step 4: Your identity is confirmed by matching your photo and details.
Step 5: Records of your verification are securely stored for 7 years.
Step 6: Once approved, your verified details are submitted to Companies House.
Preparing for Verification
Make the process as smooth as possible by having your passport or driving licence ready and ensuring your address details are correct and up to date. Verify early to avoid delays, as the process will be phased in over 12 months starting in November 2025.
